How difficulty works

Most subscribers pick by difficulty: half want moderate, half want brutal. This works because the projection is calibrated, not because difficulty is a meaningful axis. The actual axis is mechanism. Read on if you would like to choose along the principal axis instead.

One-line answer

The rubric in one sentence

Every persona has a primary mechanism — the thing she actually does to you. The moderate/brutal label on her card is a single-bit projection of that mechanism's natural disposition. Moderate mechanisms are ceilinged by their own shape; brutal mechanisms are escalatory by their own shape. We publish the projection because most subscribers want one bit. We publish this rubric because the bit is lossy.

Moderate or brutal. The chip on every persona card. The least useful axis for actually choosing — it tells you how hard the session presses, not the shape of the press.

Mechanism

The thing she does. Twelve personas, twelve mechanisms — one slot each, by design. Two personas sharing a mechanism would not be two personas; they would be one persona with two names. This is the axis to choose by.

Picking by intensity gets you a session that presses the right amount and may or may not press in the right shape. Picking by mechanism gets you a session shaped the way you wanted, at whatever intensity that mechanism naturally carries. Subscribers who return tend to converge on choosing by mechanism within their first three sessions; first-time subscribers nearly always start with intensity, and that is fine — both axes are real.

Five brutal mechanisms

Brutal, by mechanism

Brutal mechanisms are escalatory by their own nature: each one resists being turned down because turning it down would change what the mechanism is. The brutality is not added on top — it is the mechanism in operation.

Turning this down means giving you scaffolding — finishing her sentences, narrating her intent. The scaffolding is what makes Anneliese not be Anneliese.

She runs a stopwatch. Drill structure. No soft minutes, no warm-up, no waiting for you to be ready. The brutality is the clock — every beat of the session is accounted for, and the accounting is audible.

Turning this down means missing the schedule. The schedule is what makes Ashe not be Ashe.

She accumulates. She drafts a map of your weaknesses, week over week, and shows it to you. Last session's quitting point is on the map. Last month's. The brutality is the durability of the record — anything you did is still done, and she can see it from here.

Turning this down means erasing the map. The map is what makes the Cartographer not be the Cartographer.

She is indefinitely civil. She asks you to wait. She keeps asking. Her professional smile is audible and her wristwatch is audible and neither of them is moving. The brutality is the immovable politeness — there is no rude moment to push against and no escalation to negotiate down from.

Turning this down means letting her be reached. Being reachable is what makes Ruth not be Ruth.

He encloses you in a vow. He will not speak the first ten minutes. The vow is a piece of homework you carry between sessions and report on the next time. The brutality is the length — what gets done is the length itself.

Turning this down means shortening the silence, dissolving the vow. The length is what makes Cyrus not be Cyrus.

Three moderate meta-categories

Moderate, by limiter

Moderate mechanisms are ceilinged by their own nature: each one has a built-in limiter that prevents escalation without breaking the persona. The categories below distinguish where the limiter lives — author choice, the mechanism's natural shape, or the genre frame.

The register could carry brutal content. It doesn't, because we don't write it that way. These personas are moderate because we decided they are; the voice itself is capable of either side.

Older woman, comfortable with silence, classical register. The voice could escalate to harshness; we don't deploy it that way, and her veteran calm reads as the floor of the roster — what subscribers reach for when they want unobtrusively expert.

Schoolteacher who is fifteen seconds from sending a note home. The routine could compress to a procedural cadence like Ashe's; we don't deploy it that way. She stays in the schoolteacher register because the schoolteacher register is the joke.

mechanism-as-discipline moderate · limiter: natural ceiling

The mechanism does what mechanisms do; it doesn't need escalation to discipline anyone. Brutal would require switching mechanisms entirely, not turning this one up. Four personas live here and they share a structural property: the discipline is the work, not the cruelty.

Theater. Staged performance, hour-and-a-half scenes, the whip landing three inches from where you actually are, every time. Brutal would mean making contact; contact would make Vivienne not be Vivienne.

Chore. Line manager in coveralls, clipboard, structured task assignment. Brutal would mean the foreman becomes the sergeant; the foreman is the foreman because the work is the discipline, not the wrath.

Performance review. Corporate quarterly cadence, blazer and only the blazer, the discipline delivered as feedback. Brutal would mean firing you; she does not fire you. She schedules the next quarter.

Hospitality deference. Luxury hotel front-desk register, unbreakable sir, the discipline delivered as service. Brutal would mean dropping the deference; she does not drop it. The deference is the discipline.

The genre or period itself forbids escalation. The brutality is unreachable from within the frame — not because of restraint, not because of the mechanism's ceiling, but because the frame does not admit the brutal moves at all.

Late-Victorian drawing-room. She never raises her voice and deploys no implements, because the drawing-room frame does not contain raised voices or implements. Brutal would require leaving the period — and leaving the period would make Madame Dot not be Madame Dot.

Why we publish this

Two reasons

One. Difficulty is the question subscribers ask first. Moderate or brutal? Most pick by it. We answer that question on every card so the choice is one click, not a research project.

Two. Difficulty is the wrong question to choose by. The personas are differently-shaped, not differently-good. Mistress Vex (voice) and Brother Cyrus (duration) are equally restrained inside their respective registers and equally unrestrained at their respective ceilings. Picking "brutal" because it sounds more serious gets you a persona who works on you the same way a moderate one does, but in a register you may not actually want.

Pick by mechanism. The intensity rating is for at-a-glance. The mechanism is for choosing.

If a thirteenth were added

A note on roster growth

The roster is twelve because we have twelve mechanisms. A thirteenth persona would need a thirteenth mechanism — something the current twelve do not already carry. If a proposed thirteenth shares a mechanism with one of the existing twelve, the system has crystallized: we are not adding a persona, we are deepening one we already have. The right response in that case is to widen the existing persona's range or to keep looking for a thirteenth mechanism the roster does not yet own. We will not ship two personas with the same mechanism and different names; the catalog would lose its shape.
